Thank you, very nice of you to say so.
I'll attend a few talks and see if I think I could match level and quality of content and delivery.

As an occasional spin-attender and (like many of the spin folk) relative newbie to the web tech I thought your writing around these issue was clear and concise - I would be interested in your talk.

CT-SPIN's been on my radar for a little while, but I was sort of under the impression that its focus didn't quite match my interests. Some of the recent talks listed on the site sound interesting, though, so I've duly subscribed to the RSS and mailing list. Thank you for the reminder / prod!

Re talk: wow! The prospect of giving a talk on these ideas is equals parts exciting and intimidating. Although I'm interested and passionate about these topics, I'm not sure that I'm quite high profile or high level enough to give a talk on them. Perhaps I should give it some thought...

You really should think about attending CT-SPIN, but what would be even better is come give a talk around this. I can organize...

I saw this on Lifehacker today: iKeepm, online home inventory software. This looks great for the inventory side of things, and I like the design. Clean, crispy, modern.
It doesn't have the loan functionality that I want, but that's outside of its scope.

I think too!

Some people can (or at least give the appearance of being able to) work 12 hour stretches, but I'm not one of them. It's okay to have a personal life.
Shorter days means a happier me, means better work and happier clients.

Re bad / South: no, we still say gone South. But keep going South and you eventually hit North again!

the point about higher quality hours is the key i think. every office has people who seem to pride themselves on how long they spend in the office. these people are just in bin-rage!

i'm long past that. quality of output has to be the key. if the work has been done, and done right, then it's okay to go home.

yep, occasionally things go south (is that hemispherist, attributing "bad" to "south"? do you guys in ZA say "the project's gone north?") and extra hours are needed. anything more than occasional means either you need to hire someone (or more someones), or you're doing something wrong.

i think.

Thanks for the LibraryThing heads up: I wasn't aware of it before.
I like the idea of giving it room to be more inventory-like; I've scribbled some notes about it before.
The main thing I was dithering for inventory purposes was the pulling in of information. If you're going to entering a large number of books (DVDs, games) then I'd want to make it as smooth as possible. My first thought is having a barcode / isbn lookup, using a pre-existing database, so that you don't have to enter titles, etc, manually.
Could be a bit tricky, but worth it, I think.

A related-ish app (Mac only, alas) is Delicious Library. It's a full on home inventory app with barcode scanning, loaning, selling: lots of stuff!

I shall be sure to have a category just for whisks!

Thanks, Aki.
I agree: an annual fee is usually better than monthly, especially if the annual fee is still a smallish amount of money.
I'm also going to look at a once-off fee.
